Kaelynn at 17 Months

Kaelynn will be 17 months old on Monday.  She has been growing and changing so much lately.  One of the biggest things for me has been that her hair has gotten so long.  It is always in her eyes which drives me nuts.  So I have to put it in a ponytail every day.  She isnt always the most patient with me and I have never really learned how to fix other peoples hair so it is an adventure.  They do a much better time fixing her hair at daycare.  They seem to do something different with it every day.

Kaelynn is also learning to talk.  Her list of words is growing every day.  She doesnt say many words on her own but I can get her to repeat me.  A lot of them sound the same but I can tell she is saying different things.  Here are some of the things I can get her to say: “ba-ba” (for bottle), “baby”, “ball”, “Nonna”, “Poppa”, “shoes”, “boot”, and her favorite “no-no”.  There are more.  She does best with the b sound so she says lots of b words.  What really amazes me is how well she can understand.  Sometimes she acts like she has no clue and other times she does so I think she has “selective” hearing!  I will ask her if she is hungry and she will run to her high chair and start fussing at me to put her in it.  Or she will go to the lazy susan where we keep a lot of her food and she will pick out something to eat.

She is obsessed with going outside.  That is a bit of a problem because it is still winter here and it is cold!  She will get her shoes (usually her boots) and also bring me my shows.  Then she will go get her coat, hat and gloves if she knows where they are.  Then she will stand at the door and whine.  It is hard to deny her!  I cant wait for warmer weather so we can spend more time outdoors!

As far as sleep, Kaelynn is finally consistently sleeping through the night.  When she gets sick she might get up, but for the most part I dont have to get up with her anymore.  That is wonderful.  We are able to lay her down still awake and she puts herself to sleep.  Naptime is a little trickier.  Most days she naps just fine.  However sometimes I put her down and she isnt sleepy enough.  She will play and talk and fuss a little in her crib.  Sometimes this goes on for an hour before she really starts crying.  On those days she usually doesnt take a nap at all.  Luckily that is the exception but I dread the day when she gives up napping!!

She has come a long way with food too.  At 14 months she wasn't eating anything other then soft baby food.  She would throw up anything that was hard or had any texture.  She finally started eating though and now she eats really good.  Some of her favorites are mac & cheese, pizza, mandarin oranges, and any sweets of course.  One problem we have is getting her to drink milk.  We just recently stopped giving her bottles and she won't take milk out of a cup.  We try to give her other things with calcium in it (like yogurt and cottage cheese) but she usually won't eat them either.  We will keep trying.  I have a feeling that one day she will just start drinking it.

Her favorite toy right now is her baby dolls.  She got a doll for Christmas and it seemed to spark her interest.  Now she carry's her dolls around all the time and feeds them, burps them, covers them with blankets.  It is adorable.   She also likes her stacking blocks, puzzles, books and shape sorters.

It is fun to watch her interact with other kids.  At Christmas she spend some time with her cousin Olivia.  Olivia is 9 months older then Kaelynn and absolutely loves “Kae-Kae”.  She follows her everywhere and has to be doing or playing with whatever Kaelynn has.  If one has a snack the other has to have one.  If one takes a drink then other does.  They were constantly copying each others actions.  It was so cute.

She also spend time with her cousin Becket who is 6 weeks older.  Becket stays at home with his mom so he hasnt spend as much time around other kids.  It didnt take Kaelynn long at all to establish herself as the boss.  Becket wasnt sure what to think of her.  She loved to go up to him and tell him “no-no” and he would just stare at her with fear in his eyes.  He was sick too so that probably factored in a little.  He just wasnt so sure about Kaelynn and she was loving being in charge.

Kaelynn was sick a lot her first year and that seems to be continuing.  I don't think it is as bad as it was but she has had a couple bad things recently.  Right before Christmas she got RSV.  All the kids in her room at daycare had it.  We ended up going to the doctor on Christmas Eve.  In addition to the RSV she had a double ear infection.  She was so sick.  She wasnt eating at all and she was throwing up on me all day.  She was better a few days later but unfortunately she was sick for Christmas.  She was sick last Christmas too!  Poor thing.

The most recent thing was some kind of virus that caused high fevers for several days.  We went to the doctor and he said her throat looked really bad.  The strep test was negative though.  So we just treated her with Tylenol.  It was rough because her fevers were around 104 and we had a hard time getting it down with medicine.  At one point we thought we might have to take her to the ER but we were able to give her a lukewarm bath and it brought the fever down.  She was waking up at night when we medicine wore off and having a hard time going back to sleep.  So I was up with her for several hours every night.  When the fever finally went away she broke out in a rash for a couple days.  They said it was probably roseolo or something like that.  It was not a fun time!  Thankfully that is behind is.

Well, I think that is enough for now.  I have lots of pictures to post so I will try to get them posted soon!
